SNAP Reforms are Coming
Under Governor Walz, Minnesota's food stamp program has gotten weaker. Now that H.R. 1 has been signed into law, he will be forced to correct these errors so the program works for the taxpayers and the families who rely on it.
I joined my colleagues in a letter to the governor sharing our concerns with how his administration has been running the program and to let him know that change is coming. Under this new law, his administration will be required to provide work, training, or volunteer opportunities for SNAP recipients, so they can gain skills and move toward self-reliance. They will also need to get their administrative expenses under control, because the federal government is not going to foot the bill for unchecked state spending any more. And, they will have to get the state's SNAP payment error rate below 6%. This is something that Minnesota was able to do from 2011 to 2017, but is currently at 8.98%, higher than neighboring states.
