Each year, [National Hispanic Heritage Month]([link removed]) is observed from September 15 to October 15. At the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, this important month is an opportunity for us to highlight ways we can all take action –– both to deepen awareness and conversations about mental health and suicide prevention within Latine/x and Hispanic communities, and to support those who may be struggling to find the help they need.
To show your support for National Hispanic Heritage Month, we encourage you to explore the resources below, and share them with the people in your life:
- Register to attend an upcoming virtual presentation of [Talk Saves Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention for Latinx and Hispanic Communities]([link removed]). Available in English and Spanish, this program is a community-based, educational presentation that addresses mental health, suicide, and its impact on Latine/x and Hispanic communities in the United States. There will be two opportunities to attend this presentation, one in Spanish and one in English:
2–3:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday, October 1 –– A Spanish-language presentation of TSL Latinx facilitated by trained AFSP volunteers. [Register here]([link removed]).
2–3:30 p.m. ET on Thursday, October 2 –– An English-language presentation of TSL Latinx facilitated by trained AFSP volunteers. [Register here]([link removed]).
- Explore this roundup of articles by Hispanic and Latine/x authors who have shared their powerful stories on AFSP’s Real Stories blog: [“National Hispanic Heritage Month: Celebrating the Voices of Latinx and Hispanic Communities.”]([link removed])
- Request a Healing Conversation. For those in Latine/x and Hispanic communities who have lost a loved one to suicide, AFSP’s [Healing Conversations]([link removed]) program is available in English and Spanish, and offers survivors of suicide loss the opportunity to connect with an experienced AFSP volunteer who is also a loss survivor.
- Read and share our roundup of national mental health and suicide prevention resources focused on supporting Latine/x and Hispanic communities: ["Mental Health Resources for Latinx and Hispanic Communities."]([link removed])
By attending a presentation of TSL Latinx, reading the personal account of a Latine/x or Hispanic person impacted by suicide, and circulating culturally informed mental health resources in our communities, we each have the power to help prevent suicide in Latine/x and Hispanic communities. We hope you'll join our efforts. You can learn more about how to take action for National Hispanic Heritage Month by reading our recent news release.
