Today, I made a big announcement on ABC's "This Week" and in the Austin American-Statesman: While I will continue to serve you to the best of my ability throughout the remainder of this Congress, I will not seek another term.
This is not a decision I reached lightly, and I couldn't be more grateful to the people of Texas for entrusting me to represent them for more than two decades. It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve you in the United States Congress, including as chair of two prestigious committees: the Homeland Security Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee.
My father was a bombardier in World War II, fighting to secure the free world from the evils of Hitler and the Nazi Party. His bravery inspired me to pursue a life of public service and to defend our great nation from global threats. I served with honor in the halls of Congress to carry on his legacy.
During my time in Congress, I focused on strengthening U.S. national security by securing the homeland, combating terrorism, bolstering U.S. alliances, and confronting U.S. adversaries.
Now, I am ready for a new challenge using my expertise to serve the people of this country in the national security and foreign policy realm, and make America stronger and the world safer.
Until then, I look forward to continuing to serve you — the people of Texas — throughout the remainder of the 119th Congress.
