31 years ago today: President Clinton signed the federal assault weapons ban into law.

21 years ago today: Our elected officials let that ban expire.

And today: My kids’ generation is known as “the school shooting generation.”

We live in a country where assault weapons rule the streets.

We live in a country torn apart by endless mass shootings.

We live in a country where no school, no community, and no one is safe.

Because in the 21 years since the assault weapons ban was allowed to lapse, TENS OF THOUSANDS of innocent lives have been stolen by these weapons of war.

We even witnessed two innocent children die, and at least 18 other innocents injured at the barrel of an assault-style rifle just weeks ago in Minneapolis, MN, and two more students wounded in a mass school shooting at a Colorado high school just days ago – and all Trump and his Republicans have to offer are “thoughts and prayers.”

Here’s the thing: These kinds of slaughters are entirely preventable.

But since retaking office, Trump and his gun-lobby-backed MAGA majorities have unleashed waves of dangerous firearms back onto our streets – including countless assault weapons – and swept the damage those weapons have done under the rug. We’ve already witnessed almost 300 mass shootings in 2025. We simply can’t afford to wait around while Trump and his cronies play politics with our lives.
