Donald Trump knows he’s becoming a historically unpopular president — and that voters are eager to deliver him a damning referendum in the 2026 midterms. That is, if they get to weigh in fairly…

So it’s no wonder, then, that he’s farming out his vice president to do his dirty work — sending J.D. Vance in to beg Indiana to rush a mid-decade gerrymander to help them cheat. 

In case you missed it, Vance flew in to meet with Indiana Governor Mike Braun to discuss replicating the strategy Texas Republicans just deployed to steal power from voters. As if to hammer the point home, they met behind a black curtain — putting on full display that this is a shady, backroom deal happening without the approval of voters. You can’t make this up, John:

Then the White House summoned Indiana Republican lawmakers to D.C. to make sure they feel the pressure to do its bidding.

It couldn’t be clearer that Trump and his Republican allies are pulling out all the stops to try to rig the midterm elections. The NDRC is fighting back on all fronts, from Indiana to Texas to Missouri to wherever Republicans try to gerrymander next. Will you pitch in and make a donation to fund this fight for democracy?

This is a classic move from the Trump playbook. The Indiana maneuver is eerily reminiscent of the time he invited Michigan state legislators to the White House as part of a desperate pressure campaign to help him overturn the 2020 election results.

To their credit, Michigan Republicans rejected Trump’s sad attempts to steal power and ultimately helped protect the results of a free and fair election. Now Indiana Republican legislators face a similar choice: Stand with Hoosiers, who increasingly oppose this mid-decade gerrymander — or cave to Trump’s desperate plot to predetermine the outcome of the midterms before a single vote is cast.

We’re working day and night at the NDRC to make sure lawmakers in Indiana and beyond know that, if they follow through on this, they’re not just hurting our democracy. They’re outraging their constituents at the same time — and the voters won’t stand for this blatant power grab.
