General Newsletter From the Office of Senator Andy Kim

Happy Friday, New Jersey!

Congress is back in session and Senator Kim is on Capitol Hill fighting everyday for New Jersey. We know it’s been a tough week – the 24th anniversary of 9/11 reminds us of the fragility of our security and the murder of commentator Charlie Kirk amongst an increase in political violence reminds us of the fragility of our democracy. We’re grateful for communities in Jersey that continue to engage with our office and one another as a reminder that we are stronger when we come together with civility and for the cause of service.

WE'D LIKE TO HEAR FROM YOU

With the possibility of a government shutdown at the end of the month, we must be clear on our red lines because we know Republicans need our votes to prevent this from happening. And those red lines must protect the programs Americans need most.

They’ve cut food assistance, health care for millions, and now they want to take more away. Americans are facing the biggest increase in health insurance costs in 15 years. Are we going to bring down healthcare costs and help families in New Jersey OR will we watch Republicans shut the government down?

We want to hear from you: If ACA premium costs go up and your healthcare gets more expensive, how will that impact you and your family?

Working for New Jersey:

REMEMBERING 9/11:

Twenty-four years ago, our world changed forever. On the anniversary of September 11th, we remember the people who lost their lives and loved ones.

We also remember first responders and community members who stepped up to help in the aftermath of this tragedy. In darkness and devastation, acts of kindness arose. In loss and grief, we put one another and our communities first.

Senator Kim reflects on how 9/11 forever altered his own path to service and how we can continue to help those who feel called to serve.

SHARING NEW JERSEYANS’ STORIES:

Last week, we asked New Jerseyans to share how 9/11 impacted their lives and were moved by the stories of service we received in response.

These stories of choosing a path that serves others—whether it be as a teacher, nurse, first responder, or volunteer—give us hope that even in the darkest of times, we can be part of something bigger than ourselves.

Dawn from East Orange said she “became a nurse in my 50s because I felt compelled to also serve and care for others.”

Richard from Mahwah told us: “I decided to do something and joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary to back up the regular Coast Guard. I’ve been in the CG Auxiliary for 21 years and been part of many important Patrols. There is a great feeling of pride and satisfaction in having rescued several people and boats from the New York waterways!”

And Peter an immigrant from Metuchen remembered: “...I knew I wanted to do something, but I wasn't sure what. Shortly after, my son needed an emergency transport to E.R. for a breathing problem. He was taken in by volunteer EMS - Metuchen EMS. 8 weeks later I became a member, and I have been there ever since.”

Thank you for sharing your stories with us.

PROTECTING HEALTH CENTERS IN NEW JERSEY:

Senator Kim met with Alexis McGill Johnson, President of Planned Parenthood, to learn about how we can work together to protect health centers in New Jersey and around the country.

Republicans’ cuts to Medicaid directly target organizations like Planned Parenthood and the critical services they provide including reproductive healthcare and cancer screenings.

New Jerseyans – and all Americans – deserve to be able to access these critical health services.

WHAT’S HAPPENING ON CAPITOL HILL THIS WEEK:

A looming government shutdown, Republican attempts to fast-track Trump’s nominees, and an economy that Americans are concerned about.

Watch Senator Kim break it down.

Working for you at the Capitol:

FIGHTING FOR AN INDEPENDENT FED:

Trump’s Federal Reserve nominee Stephen Miran is ALSO his chief economic advisor.

Americans need an independent Fed that looks out for the interest of the many, not the few.

This is exactly the kind of conflict of interest that can crash an economy.

Watch Senator Kim question Miran about his position at the White House.

STANDING UP TO CORRUPTION IN GOVERNMENT:

We’re living in a world where if you side with and defend the President, you’ll get a lifetime appointment to a judgeship.

Watch Senator Kim’s take.

TACKLING THE HOUSING CRISIS:

Americans need housing that fits their budgets.

That’s why Sen. Kim, Sen. Warner, and Sen. LBR introduced legislation to help build new paths to affordable housing by working with faith-based organizations and colleges and universities.

Together, we can unlock opportunities that already exist in our communities and transform underused property in much-needed housing.
