SHARING NEW JERSEYANS’ STORIES:
Last week, we asked New Jerseyans to share how 9/11 impacted their lives and were moved by the stories of service we received in response.
These stories of choosing a path that serves others—whether it be as a teacher, nurse, first responder, or volunteer—give us hope that even in the darkest of times, we can be part of something bigger than ourselves.
Dawn from East Orange said she “became a nurse in my 50s because I felt compelled to also serve and care for others.”

Richard from Mahwah told us: “I decided to do something and joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary to back up the regular Coast Guard. I’ve been in the CG Auxiliary for 21 years and been part of many important Patrols. There is a great feeling of pride and satisfaction in having rescued several people and boats from the New York waterways!”
And Peter an immigrant from Metuchen remembered: “...I knew I wanted to do something, but I wasn't sure what. Shortly after, my son needed an emergency transport to E.R. for a breathing problem. He was taken in by volunteer EMS - Metuchen EMS. 8 weeks later I became a member, and I have been there ever since.”
Thank you for sharing your stories with us.
