Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

09/12/25

From the vibrant quetzals of Central America to the resilient roadrunners of the Southwest, birds have always been messengers that transcend borders and connect cultures across the Americas. Hispanic Heritage Month, which began as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 under President Lyndon B. Johnson and was expanded to a full month by President Ronald Reagan in 1988, celebrates these very connections. This year, as we observe the celebration from September 15 to October 15, we invite you to join us in honoring the rich cultural heritage that binds our communities together through our shared love of the birds that migrate between our nations and fill our skies with beauty and wonder.

NBVA's Hispanic Heritage Month Initiatives:

The Northern Virginia Bird Alliance is proud to participate in this celebration by highlighting our ongoing programs that build bridges between communities and foster a shared love of birds, as well as share some events we have coming up.

Kids Birders Club at Casa Chirilagua

Our Diversity and Inclusion chair, Jo Doumbia, has worked with local organization Casa Chirilagua to establish a Kids Birders Club to support introducing young minds to the wonders of local wildlife.  We've been working with the children at Casa Chirilagua to establish a Kids Birders Club, introducing young minds to the wonder of local wildlife. As part of a recent grant, we worked to create a wonderful video highlighting this important program. Give it a watch here!

Spanish-Language Bird Walks

In partnership with Latino environmental organizations, we regularly offer bird walks conducted in Spanish. Join us this Saturday, September 13th, for a special Spanish-language bird walk at Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge, presented in collaboration with the Prince William Soil and Water Conservation District. The walk starts at 10:30 AM - see you there!

Author Presentation: Birds of the Tropical Andes

We're excited to host Michael Parr, President of the American Bird Conservancy, for a presentation of his new book Birds of the Tropical Andes. Mr. Parr has co-authored several acclaimed works including Parrots: A Guide to the Parrots of the World, Important Bird Areas in the United States, and the American Bird Conservancy Guide to Bird Conservation. We hope you’ll join us September 24th for this awesome virtual event!

Come celebrate with us as we explore how birds unite our communities across cultural boundaries and geographic borders.

For more information about these events, please contact NVBA at [email protected]

As we close this email, we invite you to support our mission of building bridges between communities through birds. Your donation helps us expand programs like our Kids Birders Club at Casa Chirilagua, offer more Spanish-language bird walks, and continue fostering connections that transcend cultural and geographic boundaries. These free, inclusive programs happen because of generous supporters like you who believe in the power of birds to unite our diverse communities!
