Hello John —
From first grade through law school, I attended public schools right here in North Carolina.
My mom was a public school teacher, and during my time in public schools, I was privileged to have teachers who cared about me, a family that supported me, and a broader community committed to providing an excellent public education for which I remain grateful. My NC public school education put me on the path that has brought me here.
As a new school year gets underway, I want us all to bear in mind that our nation’s future leaders are learning in public schools today. Every student in every classroom across our country deserves the same opportunities that I had.
I am making an urgent appeal today for you to stand with me in support of public education, John. It’s a bedrock of our society and a promise to future generations — but it is under attack. Will you add your name to oppose extreme GOP cuts to public education?
The federal government’s policies of slashing education funding, cutting school lunches, and otherwise undermining education are sowing chaos across the country, and they will harm students here in North Carolina and beyond.
I’m concerned for students who rely on Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or other special education services. I worry for districts where far-right school voucher scams for the wealthy are siphoning resources away from the students most in need. And I am deeply troubled by the prospect of further cuts to come.
Join me and defend public schools, educators, and students. Add your name to my petition opposing far-right cuts to public education.
Thank you for speaking out,
Roy Cooper

P.S. Public schools shaped me. I know the same is true for many of you, and if you are willing, I hope you will share a story of how public education has impacted you or your loved ones. You can share your thoughts when you add your name to our petition here.
