Dear John,
Our new report is out.
“Queering Democracy: The Global Elections in 2024 and How LGBTIQ People Fared. ([link removed]) ”
It maps electoral dynamics across 60 countries and the European Union. It shows how queer communities took part, held the line, and where systems failed us.
One truth runs through the data. Hate was on the ballot. Political actors used LGBTIQ people as a wedge in at least 51 of the 60 countries we studied. Sometimes it crossed into hate speech and calls to violence.
Another truth? We showed up for democracy. From the July uprising in Bangladesh to anti-authoritarian protests in Türkiye, LGBTIQ people defended the basic rules that keep everyone safe.
Barriers remain. Criminalizing laws, the absence of legal gender recognition, gendered polling practices, and safety risks kept people from registering or voting. Still, communities organized, ran, and voted.
