John,

Today marks 24 years since nearly 3,000 lives were lost on September 11, 2001.

We honor the first responders, servicemembers, and ordinary Americans who sacrificed so much in the days and years that followed. In the aftermath of that horrific attack, neighbors helped neighbors and strangers stood side by side.

May we remember the unity, compassion, and resilience of our nation in those days, particularly as we face deep divisions and difficult times.

America was built on the belief that we can fiercely debate ideas without dehumanizing one another. That we can cast different votes and still be neighbors, coworkers, and friends. That out of many, we are one.To those who seek peace and understanding, now is the time to speak louder. We cannot let violence define our politics or poison our future.

I know our political system feels irreparably broken, and I know trust is low. But I have seen firsthand that when we choose respect over rage, we can accomplish big things together.

I cannot control every voice in our national conversation, but I can choose how I use mine. I will continue to use my position to try, in even the smallest ways, to bring people together rather than divide them further apart. To listen more. To show that disagreement does not have to mean destruction.

We can choose community over chaos. We can prove that America’s promise is stronger than anger and division.

And we must.

Mike
