Friend,
Twenty-four years ago today, the September 11 attacks forever scarred our communities and changed New Jersey and our nation in ways we could’ve never imagined. That day, we lost more than 700 of our family members, friends, and neighbors.
Every year on this day, we honor the lives lost and grieve with the families that will never be the same.
I can’t help but think too about the aftermath of the attacks — the heroism of our first responders, the way that communities came together, and the way that we still honor those we lost.
I think about the first responders who didn’t hesitate to run into harm’s way, to save lives and recover others from the rubble. Those first responders who answered the call represent the best America has to offer. They understood that our first and foremost duty as Americans is to take care of one another. We owe it to their memories to continue caring for those who deal with the ongoing health impacts from that day. I have been proud to fight in Congress to guarantee that care, passing the PACT Act and funding the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund.
I also think about the sense of community and love of country that emerged amid incredible fear, and the sense that anywhere in America could be next. In that incredibly dark time in our history, it was our unity that helped us through. Ordinary people went out of their way to care for one another and keep each other safe.
That feeling made me proud to be an American and proud to be a servicemember. Twenty-four years later, as we face other challenges, I am still proud to be an American.
God bless you and the United States of America,
Mikie Sherrill
