Hi John,
We need you to raise your voice against the US Big Tech global takeover. Across the world, Donald Trump is using trade war to force countries into deeper dependence on US tech monopolies - and the UK is no different.
Next week, he’ll dine with Keir Starmer, the King and billionaire US tech barons at a state banquet in Windsor, in an attempt to negotiate a dangerous US-UK technology ‘pact’. And as part of this, the UK's £5 billion Digital Services Tax is on the chopping block.
Tell the UK Government: don't sell out to Big Tech ([link removed])
Trump says that governments implementing taxation, regulation and protection measures on Big Tech are unfairly discriminating against US companies. But that’s not true.
The fact is that Big Tech corporations are already the richest and most powerful corporations in the world. Corporations like Google, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft and Apple dominate global markets. The U.S. digital economy, on its own, would be the world’s eighth-largest economy.
Through digital trade, these companies extract huge amounts of value globally, all of which ends up in the hands of a few oligarchic tech barons. Among the top 10 richest people in the world are 8 US tech billionaires. US tech monopolies are also facilitating immense wealth flows from south to north, entrenching their monopoly power, creating profound wealth inequality and exacerbating climate catastrophe.
We need to take action to constrain these modern robber barons. But Big Tech, like Big Pharma in the 1990s, is using trade deals to entrench their power, using international agreements to remove taxes and regulations they don’t like. And Trump has their back. Now, our own government is seeking a ‘technology pact’ with the US and is in danger of caving to Trump’s demands that we drop our Digital Services Tax in order to get it.
Can you take action ahead of next week's state visit? Signing away our right to tax, regulate and protect our economy from US tech monopolies is a recipe for disaster. If they get their way, they will continue to dominate the global economy at the expense of people and planet.
Big Tech must be stopped. Tell the UK government not to trade away our right to tax, regulate and break up Big Tech.
Write to the Government now ([link removed])
