They are among the most beautiful displays of patriotism you’ll ever see. Families cheer, new citizens sometimes cry tears of joy, and you can feel the gratitude for the opportunity to belong and to participate fully in our democracy.

For decades, nonpartisan groups like the League of Women Voters have been there too, ready to help these new Americans take their very first step into civic life by registering them to vote.

Now, the Trump Administration has banned those groups from registering voters at naturalization ceremonies administered by federal agencies.

It is a cruel and unnecessary step that could silence the voices of new Americans before they’ve even had the chance to be heard.

When I see a newly naturalized citizen register to vote, I think about my own grandfather, who was born in Minnesota to Jewish immigrants fleeing persecution.

They left a place where they had no voice. That history is why I do this work, and why I won’t back down from defending the freedom to vote for every eligible American.
