Hi Folks,

Rachel here!

I help out with a lot of the emails we get, so some of you probably recognize my name from time to time. I’m also Daisy’s youngest daughter, and I think you deserve a little bit of an update…

As many of you know, Daisy has been struggling quite a bit with chronic pain after her surgeries, with walking, and with all of the new “fun” things you get to learn when you suddenly become disabled. (Yes, I said it!)

Life has been… interesting for the two of us these past few years. We’ve always been close, but learning how to live as a mommy-daughter duo at 25 and… uhhh… 38? Yeah, let’s go with that… has been an experience. Sometimes we thrive, sometimes we just survive - but we’re figuring it out.

If there’s one thing this time has taught me, it’s just how much she loves all of you. I’ll read her an email, and she’ll immediately light up and say, “Is that so-and-so? That sounds like this person. I wonder how their spouse is doing.” She remembers you. She cares about you. She values you. And so do I.

The last couple of months have been hard. We hit a pretty rough financial patch, and I picked up another restaurant job on top of my current one, plus everything I do here at The OP. Daisy’s been doing her darndest to finish Haven Hill and start churning out her next fiction book. Your generosity during her fundraiser a few weeks ago quite literally saved us.

Before I go any further: this is not me asking for more help. We’re okay right now. We’ve made some changes (like switching our server and email provider to fit our budget better), and I just want to keep you in the loop - the same way I’m doing with the rest of the family.

Last week, I finally convinced Daisy that she really wasn’t well. I dragged her to the doctor (she was thrilled), and we found out she had pneumonia in both lungs. We grabbed antibiotics and all the fun meds, but the oral antibiotics just weren’t cutting it.

On Monday, I called the doctor back and explained how much worse she’d gotten, and he told me, “You need to take her to the ER. Like now.”

Growing up in Canada, “going to emerg” means pack like you’re going camping - so I charged our devices, grabbed cozy clothes, a good heap of library books, and a variety pack of snacks and drinks. (I take hospital preparedness very seriously, maybe it’s hereditary.)

We checked in, did about a million tests, and nine hours later, they finally got her into a bed. She’s been in the hospital ever since.

Honestly? It’s been scary.

Daisy wants to get back to normal - grocery trips, doing dishes, helping with laundry, taking little walks to the mail room, and most importantly, writing for all of you. But it’s going to take some time. Thankfully, it hasn’t turned into sepsis like the ER docs first worried, but there are still a lot of unanswered questions. For now, she’s getting IV antibiotics, all the fluids, good meals, and some of the best nurses I’ve ever met.

Today was rough - scary low oxygen levels, scary high blood pressure, scary fevers - but our nurses Natasha, Maria, and Aleah have been incredible. They ask questions I wouldn’t even think to ask, they gently push back on orders that don’t seem quite right, and they advocate for my mom like she’s their own family. We are so, so lucky to have them.

I know this isn’t a new chapter of a book, a sass-filled Daisy article, or a glittery Survival Sunday. But I’m going to try to get a few articles from our writers out this week, and maybe even wrangle Daisy into helping me with a Survival Sunday if she’s feeling up to it.

In the meantime, we’re doing our best to focus on our glimmers. We’ve been watching the rain outside our hospital window, enjoying the cooler weather, and yes - I’ve been wearing my coziest sweaters while sipping apple cinnamon tea like the main character that I am.

We’ve been rewatching the same shows we used to watch together when I was home sick from school as a kid. I’ve filled her in on every single piece of gossip from the last two weeks (I have to talk enough for both of us right now), we’ve filled about a million coloring book pages, and we’ve just been enjoying some quiet time together despite everything.

She’s resting as much as she can and trying to get better - it’s just going to take some time.

If you want to send over your own glimmers, fun stories, or just a hello, I’ll share them with Daisy. I head back to my other jobs tomorrow, so it may take me a bit of time to get back to you guys… but it’s been nice to play hooky with my mom for a few days - just like old times. :)

Have a truly wonderful week, and I will talk to you guys soon.

Stay safe.

Be happy.

Love,

Rachel
