Connecticut Republican Chairman Ben Proto Condemns Shooting of Charlie Kirk, Urges Americans to Bring Change at the Ballot Box—Not Through Violence
Middletown, CT – Connecticut Republican Party Chairman Ben Proto today issued the following statement in response to the shooting of Turning Point USA Founder Charlie Kirk:
“The shooting of Charlie Kirk is a shocking and cowardly act of political violence that has no place in our country. Whether we agree or disagree with someone’s views, America is built on the principles of free speech and debate, not on bullets and bloodshed.
I, along with the entire Connecticut Republican Party, and millions of Americans, stand with Charlie and his family, and we pray for his full and speedy recovery. This attack is not just against one man—it is an attack on the very freedoms we all hold dear.
Let me be clear: violence is never the answer. The way we change the direction of our state and our nation is not through violence or intimidation, but through persuasion, organizing, and—most importantly—the ballot box.
Democrats and Republicans alike must denounce this heinous act and recommit ourselves to civility in political discourse. We can disagree, even passionately and vociferously, without resorting to violence. America must be better than this.
The senseless violence we continue to see, whether stabbings on trains, assaults on our children, or attempts to silence political figures simply because of their beliefs, denigrates us all and makes a mockery of what America has stood for, and what it must continue to stand for, both here and around the world.
Connecticut Republicans will continue to fight for common-sense policies and real solutions for the people of our state, but we will always do so through peaceful, democratic means.
It is time for Americans to come together and remember that our strength lies in our ability to resolve our differences at the polls, not in the streets.
Please keep Charlie—and all the innocents who have suffered at the hands of violence—in your prayers.”
