Governor Gordon Welcomes Announcement of Black Butte Mine Expansion Approval

CHEYENNE, Wyo. –  Governor Mark Gordon has issued a statement in support of a decision by the U.S. Department of Interior (DOI) to approve a mining plan modification that will allow the Black Butte Mine in Sweetwater County to mine an additional 9.2 million tons of federally-owned coal.

Governor Gordon also welcomed the announcement by DOI to rescind the Biden Public Lands Rule, which the Governor challenged in court last year and testified against during a U.S. House Committee on Natural Resources meeting in June 2023. The Governor’s statement follows:

“This is great news for Southwest Wyoming and for Wyoming energy consumers. Once more the Trump Administration is demonstrating its commitment to a wise, multiple-use approach to public lands and minerals in Wyoming. After the Biden Administration ignored my earlier requests to move forward with this approval, it is most gratifying that Secretary Burgum took action and expedited the review of the Environmental Impact Statement on the Black Butte Mine Expansion. This will allow mining operations to resume and continue through 2039.

The Public Lands rule has always been a prime example of federal overreach, as then-Governor Noem and I testified, this ill-advised rule was beyond the Bureau of Land Management’s authority. The announcement that it will be rescinded is welcome news.”
