I still believe in the potential of the American Dream. Because I lived it.

I grew up the daughter of immigrants, sharing a sofa bed with my siblings in a one-room apartment behind my parents’ dry cleaners. And I worked my way through public school to a state university, to become California’s Chief Financial Officer.

But, John, I also know the pathways are much narrower and more costly than they were just a few decades ago. And many of those pathways continue to be reduced by the year.

That’s by design: Too often, we don’t have voices in the room with lived experience. And the extremely privileged few aren’t even trying to get out of their bubbles – they’re pulling the ladder up behind them.

That’s why I’m running for Governor – at a time when the dream of getting ahead to better provide for ourselves and our families is getting out of reach for too many among us, I want to ensure everyone has a voice in the room. And who you were born to doesn’t determine a fixed ceiling on your future.
