Dear friend,
This was going to be our ‘2 days to go’ email ahead of Friday’s debate, but instead I’m writing with important news.
Hundreds of Peers have signed up to speak at the assisted dying Bill’s Second Reading in the House of Lords - so the debate will now take place over two days, this Friday 12 and Friday 19 September. While we don’t know for sure if there will be a vote, this extension means that any votes will take place on 19 September, not this week – so Peers need to hear that you expect them to be there, prepared to vote for dignity on both Fridays.
This decison is almost unprecedented. It’s a powerful sign of the scale of interest and the seriousness of this issue. It just shows how much momentum we’ve built together. This Friday remains hugely important - it marks the beginning of this record-breaking debate and is our chance to show Peers that people across the country are watching closely.
We know that even a single message can tip the balance. We’ve heard directly from Peers themselves about how many emails they have received and the real difference it makes. A personal message from you asking them to turn up, listen to the debate, and be prepared to vote could help make sure the Chamber is full when it matters most.
With your help, we can turn this record-breaking debate into a record-breaking show of support. Together, on the 12th and the 19th, we can prove to Parliament and the country that this is the will of the people - and that we are ready to see it through.
Best wishes,
