Donald Trump and his MAGA allies are moving full speed ahead with their plan to seize control of the courts – and they’ve scored another win. The Senate just confirmed Edward Artau, a nominee whose corruption alone should have disqualified him from consideration.
Artau was actively seeking Trump’s nomination at the same time he sat on a defamation case involving Trump personally. Instead of recusing himself, he ruled on the case – all while maneuvering behind the scenes for a lifetime federal judgeship. That’s a blatant conflict of interest, and now he’s been rewarded with a powerful seat.
And it doesn’t stop there. The Senate Judiciary Committee is preparing to advance four more nominees on Thursday who would serve as rubber stamps for Trump’s dangerous agenda:
- Joshua Dunlap (First Circuit): Advocated for laws undermining abortion rights and supported efforts to let religion be weaponized as an excuse for discrimination.
- Chad Meredith (KY-E): Defended anti-abortion mandates designed to shut down clinics, fought against workers’ rights, and partnered with extremist groups like the Alliance Defending Freedom.
- Eric Tung (9th Circuit): Refused to affirm rights to abortion or marriage equality, sidestepped past sexist remarks, and would not condemn racist statements from his friend Mike Davis.
- William Mercer (MT): Voted for bills targeting abortion rights, transgender people, and drag shows, and refused to express an opinion on whether Trump was right to pardon the insurrectionists.
If confirmed, these judges will roll back reproductive freedom, attack LGBTQ+ equality, erode worker protections, and undermine democracy itself. They would give Trump exactly what he wants: a judiciary loyal to him, not to the Constitution or the American people.
We cannot allow Trump to cement his MAGA agenda in the courts for generations to come.
