Hi John, it’s Hannah Pingree!
Last week, like so many other parents across Maine, I sent my two kids back to school. They’re starting eighth and ninth grade! While they’re excited to start a new school year, they’re also sad that summer is over.
Since launching this campaign three months ago, I’ve heard a lot about education as I travel across our state.
I’ve visited public schools, seen Career and Technical Education programs in action, and just recently visited Maine Maritime Academy. I have seen firsthand how quality investments in our kids’ and young adults’ education are critical to the future of our economy and our state.
While visiting some of these schools and trade education centers, I’ve talked to the incredible people who educate our kids, keep them fed, and keep our schools clean. I know those who teach and care for our kids don't get paid enough, and their jobs have never been harder. I've talked to moms and dads about their worries. And I've heard directly from parents and students who are worried that our schools are falling behind.
I’ve also talked to parents about the worries and fears they have about sending their kids back to school in a country where mass shootings have become the norm.
I know what it takes to prioritize education and keep our kids safe, because I’ve done it my whole career. I chaired my local school board and stood up for our kids as Maine Speaker of the House.
