< [link removed] > Egale Canada and Skipping Stone Launch Legal Challenge Against Name and Pronoun Restrictions in Alberta’s Education Amendment Act

Egale Canada and Skipping Stone, represented by lawyers from Egale and McCarthy Tétrault LLP, have initiated litigation against the Government of Alberta, challenging the constitutionality of the pronoun and name school restrictions contained in the Education Amendment Act, 2024(formerly Bill 27).

For gender-diverse youth, especially for those with difficult family situations, having the support of an affirming teacher and school environment can be critical.

Schools are often the first, and sometimes the only setting where these young people can safely express their gender identity. Bill 27 removes that protection. It strips educators of the ability to exercise professional judgment in supporting their students. It mandates that, if a student requests to be recognized by a name or pronouns consistent with their gender identity, the student must be outed to their parents.

Bill 27 is a direct attack on the constitutional rights of gender-diverse youth in Alberta.

We are determined to continue the fight for a society where all people are able to live authentic and full lives, but we need your support.

< [link removed] > Back-To-School with Egale

Every student in Canada has the right to a safe and inclusive learning environment where they (and their families) are reflected.

However, Egale Canada’s national report, Still in Every Class in Every School, shows that 2SLGBTQI students continue to face homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia at school.

This is why it’s more important than ever that we all come together to empower all members of the school community to create safer and more affirming schools for 2SLGBTQI students.
