John, it’s Julie Johnson – and I’m on the frontlines of one of the most important fights of our generation.
When I first watched Donald Trump’s shocking upset in 2016, I was gutted. I knew then that I had to get involved, and after folks began encouraging me to run for local office, I decided to go all in – and I won. The best part about winning my first race? I unseated an extremist Republican bigot, flipped my district from red-to-blue, and became a voice for all Texans in our state legislature.
I passed over 100 bills and helped write 300 more, both to protect Texans from the chaos of the Trump presidency and to help reverse the damages once he left office. |

But this work came with gut-wrenching moments – like when Texas Republicans tried to overrule marriage equality in our state and redefine marriage as the union between one man and one woman. It was a harsh reminder that my Republican colleagues don't think the love my wife and I have is good enough to make a lifetime commitment to each other.
Their attempts to strike down same-sex marriage in Texas failed – but then Roe was overturned, Trump launched another campaign, and my Congressman, Colin Allred, announced he was running for Senate. That’s when I decided to step up and run for Congress. I never imagined that I would become the first openly LGBTQ+ member of Congress ever elected in the South – but I worked my tail off to get here, and I don’t take a moment of it for granted. |

Now, my first year in Congress has been loaded with the responsibility of fighting back against Donald Trump’s second term – I guess you could say my political journey has come full circle. I’m not your typical politician. I’ve never been afraid to call out Republican corruption, stand up to special interests, or challenge the status quo. That’s what makes me such a threat to Republicans. And that’s why I’m fighting with everything I’ve got against Trump.
