John,
Earlier this week, President Trump took to the Museum of the Bible in Washington, DC to show the American people just how out of touch, callous, and ignorant he is on the issue of domestic violence.
Trump is suggesting that domestic violence isn’t really a crime and shouldn’t count as one. That’s beyond shocking. In the same speech where he claimed crime in Washington D.C. was “virtually nothing,” he brushed off domestic violence as “little fights with the wife” that only make crime look worse on paper. Once again, his words dismiss the reality that millions of women face every day in their homes and relationships.
That’s why we’re asking you to make a $20.00 donation today. We need to push back against this kind of rhetoric and double down on our work to protect survivors, strengthen policy, and keep communities safe.
The truth is domestic violence is not minor. It is deadly and pervasive. In the U.S., one in four women and one in seven men will experience severe physical violence from a partner in their lifetime. Forty-one percent of women report experiencing stalking, sexual violence, or physical abuse by an intimate partner. For too many families, home is not a safe place.
And when firearms are involved, domestic violence becomes even more deadly. More than half of the women murdered in the United States are killed by an intimate partner, most often with a gun. Easy access to firearms turns abuse into tragedy, and every dismissive word from leaders stalls progress.
When leaders minimize the crisis, it puts lives at risk. It tells survivors they don’t matter. It emboldens abusers. And it undermines decades of progress made to strengthen protections and support for victims.
We refuse to let this stand.
