Later this month, absentee ballots will be mailed out to my district for November’s elections. I am proud to endorse Denzel McCampbell in his race for Detroit City Council.

We need elected officials at all levels who have the courage to stand up to fascism and the authoritarian-in-chief.

But right now, in my progressive city of Detroit, we have a City Council candidate who is backed by billionaires, aligned with MAGA Republicans, and friendly with Trump.

As a State Representative, she was the only Democrat to join Republicans in forcing the Michigan legislature to end last year’s session early—while we had a Democratic trifecta and while awaiting votes on much-needed policies for water affordability, Black Maternal Health, and voting rights. She has voted against abortion rights and endorsed Republicans who’ve tried to criminalize protesters.

Last month, she was the lone Democrat who voted with Republicans to strip Detroit and our communities of millions of dollars of funding for hospitals, public education, proven public safety programs, and institutions such as the Arab American National Museum, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, and the Holocaust Memorial Center.

Thankfully, Detroiters have a choice. And I’m proud to support Denzel McCampbell for Detroit City Council.

Like me, Denzel was born and raised in Detroit, is dedicated to public service, and believes that everyone should have safe, well-resourced, and thriving neighborhoods. Denzel is also a member of the DSA Metro Detroit chapter and a proud democratic socialist. He’s also part of the LGBTQ+ community, and I was proud to march alongside him at this summer’s Motor City Pride:
