Greetings—
Across the country, families with young children are unable to afford basic necessities, with nearly half (46 percent) of all families with children ages 3 and younger struggling to afford diapers—that percentage increases to 60 percent among families with low incomes.

"Mapping Diaper Insecurity in the US,” a new Urban Institute interactive data tool developed in collaboration with the National Diaper Bank Network, finds that it would take an average of almost 4.8 billion diapers each year to meet the needs of families with children 3 and younger.
Offering key metrics at the national, state, and county levels, this data tool can help government leaders and community advocates develop strategies to improve access to basic hygiene products and ultimately ensure families have what they need to be healthy and thrive.

Key findings detailed in a related fact sheet include:
- Nearly 8 million children 3 and younger across the US live in families that struggle to afford diapers.
- While the average cost of diapering one child is about $100 per month, the median family can only afford to pay $65.
- For postpartum and menstruating mothers, the financial challenges of being a new parent are compounded; 35 percent of families that are diaper insecure also struggle to afford period products. These parents might put the money they previously spent on period products toward diapers.
- Federal programs that help families purchase food and nutrition supports and provide cash assistance in times of need, like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, do not cover diapers or period products.
