Dear Friend,
I wish I were writing with better news. On Thursday, a divided federal appeals court paused a trial court’s order that required the Trump administration and the state of Florida to wind down operations at a mass detention center in the Everglades, callously called “Alligator Alcatraz.”
I want to make one thing very clear: This fight is not over.
At the end of the day, the facts and the law are on our side. Building a detention center in the heart of the Everglades was and is reckless and unlawful.
The court’s decision last week is a significant setback. It means that, for now, the detention center can continue with business as usual until another panel of the appeals court decides whether the trial judge’s preliminary injunction should be upheld.
I am still hopeful that the trial court's preliminary injunction will be upheld and reinstated. And I am hopeful we can ultimately win the entire case.
Earthjustice and our partners and clients are made for moments like this. With your support, we are able to go to court and fight these battles for as long as it takes.
Onward,
Tania Galloni
Managing Attorney
