**THE FORUM DAILY**Yesterday, the Supreme Court lifted a restraining order that had halted immigration agents from stopping people based on their race and language, reports Andrew Chung of Reuters [link removed].
The ruling means that, at least while the underlying legal challenge proceeds, immigration agents can continue to employ “roving patrols,” a practice the Trump administration began in Los Angeles in June.
“We should not have to live in a country where the Government can seize anyone who looks Latino,” speaks Spanish, and appears to work a low wage job, Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote in her dissent in the 6-3 ruling.
In Los Angeles, locals are feeling fearful and angry, report Brittny Mejia, Rachel Uranga and Ruben Vives of the Los Angeles Times [link removed].
“A lot of people are worried. The whole community,” said Pepe Morales, a father and day laborer who has lived in the U.S. for 25 years.
Gustavo Arellano, a U.S. citizen, writes in his Los Angeles Times [link removed] column that he’ll now carry his passport all the time.
“The decision effectively states that those of us with undocumented family and friends — a huge swath of Southern California and beyond — should watch over our shoulders, even if we’re in this country legally,” writes Arellano.
