A San Francisco jury just found Google guilty of invading user privacy on a massive scale, slapping the tech giant with a $425 million penalty. The case revealed how Google allegedly tracked millions of Americans—even after they turned off the very settings meant to protect them.

For years, “Web & App Activity” was supposed to be the off-switch for surveillance. But evidence showed Google kept hoovering up data anyway, partnering with app makers to siphon information it promised not to touch.
