Janelle Bynum for Congress

Last week, a top Florida official said that the immigrant detention center in Florida that the Trump administration dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz” would soon be empty.

“Alligator Alcatraz” should have never opened in the first place. It's unsafe, uninhabitable, and a violation of human rights.

That’s why I was proud to lead my colleagues to demand DHS and ICE shut it down — and I was glad to hear it would be empty soon. This was a massive step forward in our fight to treat immigrants with the respect and humanity they deserve. But our fight is far from over.

On Thursday, an appeals court temporarily blocked a judge’s order to dismantle “Alligator Alcatraz,” allowing the detention center to remain open.

So it’s on us to keep pushing forward and demanding the closure of this unsafe and inhumane detention center for good.

Just like I have since it opened, I’ll keep fighting for the Trump administration to close this detention center and treat immigrants with the dignity they deserve — and I hope you’ll join me in this fight. Help me keep up this critical work in Congress by chipping in today →
