Under Joe Biden, America didn’t have a President — we had an autopen.
As you know, the House Oversight Committee is currently investigating whether President Biden’s cognitive decline was covered up by his top White House aides, as well as if key decisions were made on his behalf using an autopen. These include executive actions, pardons, and policy directives.
Internal emails and memos recently obtained by Axios reveal high-ranking Biden Administration officials frequently questioned the President’s use of the autopen, especially related to controversial pardons. Notably, Joe Biden granted clemency to more people than any president in U.S. history, with more than 95% of those actions taking place in the final weeks of his presidency.
According to one source, “There was a mad dash to find groups of people that he could then pardon — and then they largely didn't run it by the Justice Department to vet them.”
Alarming is an understatement.
Just three days before leaving office, President Biden issued 2,490 commutations — the most ever by a president on a single day. While he claimed they were for people “convicted of nonviolent drug offenses who are serving disproportionately long sentences,” this was simply not the case. Even top attorneys at the Department of Justice criticized the decision and its characterization, noting numerous individuals with violent criminal records were included in the sweeping commutations. For example, one man received clemency from Joe Biden despite pleading guilty to murdering a woman and her 2-year-old daughter.
If you recall, Joe Biden also pardoned members of his own family on his last day in office. Like many of the other highly controversial pardons, these were also signed using an autopen.
According to an internal White House memo and emails, several Biden staffers questioned whether the President actually approved the pardons and argued he should be physically signing them.
Folks, this scandal continues to raise serious concerns about who was calling the shots in the Biden White House. Not only are there legal questions surrounding the legitimacy of these pardons, but there is also a desire to deliver justice to victims’ families impacted by pardons and commutations for violent criminals.
Additional top Biden White House officials are set to testify over the coming weeks, including White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients. I’m confident that House Oversight Committee Republicans will leave no stone unturned in their pursuit of the truth.
After all, the American people deserve justice, transparency, and accountability.
