SPECIAL REPORT: Trump Launches Religious Liberty Initiative
What happened today here in Washington, D.C., was extraordinary. All of us should thank God for the Trump/Vance administration.
I watched President Donald Trump’s incredible speech at the Museum of the Bible. The occasion was the second hearing of the Religious Liberty Commission. The president boldly defended America’s Christian heritage—a key part of our mission here at American Values—and he vowed to “restore our country as one nation under God.”
President Trump emphasized the importance of the Declaration of Independence. As you know, my entire career has been built around the key words in the Declaration of Independence that define America. I have talked with the president about how God was in our nation at the beginning. The words of the Declaration tell us the most important belief of our Founders:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
President Trump called out Senator Tim Kaine for saying the idea that our rights come from God, not government, was “extremely troubling.” Trump said, “The senator from Virginia should be ashamed of himself.”
When I was recently in the Oval Office with other Christian leaders, President Trump enthusiastically showed us one of the original copies of the Declaration of Independence.
Today, recognizing that the Bible was in America’s classrooms for most of our history, President Trump said that far too many public schools are hostile to the Bible, and students are literally punished for their Christian faith.
The president invited a middle school student from California up to the podium to share with the audience what happened to him. He was forced to read a book about gender identity to a kindergarten student, even though it conflicted with his Christian faith. The student was mocked and bullied after his parents objected.
President Trump has ordered the Department of Education to issue new regulations soon protecting the right of students to pray in our public schools.
The president also reminded the audience how he has fought to get “transgender insanity” out of our schools, to get men out of women’s sports, and to protect our children from “chemical and surgical mutilation.”
In addition to the attacks on our rights, President Trump also condemned the increasing violence against Christians and Jews. He called the transgender school killer in Minneapolis “demonic.”
That is exactly what we have said since the shooting. I just returned from the James Dobson Family Institute’s yearly event, “The Gathering.” I delivered an entire speech explaining that the attack in Minneapolis was one battle in the spiritual warfare we are in. It was a clash between Satan’s people, the killer, and God’s people, who were praying in the church that morning.
Our schools have failed to teach America’s founding principle clearly stated in the Declaration of Independence. President Trump intends to put that principle at the center of America’s 250th anniversary celebrations. He announced today a major prayer initiative.
Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Scott Turner, who I have spoken with, announced a weekly prayer campaign leading up to our 250th anniversary on July 4, 2026. President Trump is encouraging people to meet together in groups of ten all across America to pray for our nation each week.
People have often asked me, “Can’t we get the president to declare a time of prayer and fasting for the country?” President Trump made it clear today that he wants millions of Americans praying every day for the country as we prepare to celebrate 250 years of freedom and liberty.
It is clear that Satan would have loved for the Butler, Pennsylvania, attempted assassin to have murdered Donald Trump.
We all know that it was not a “coincidence,” a “lucky break,” or an “amazing accident” that the president turned his head at exactly the right millisecond, preventing the bullet that was intended to smash into his brains from hitting its target and hitting his ear instead.
If there was one thing Satan would want more than anything else, it would be to stop American Christians and others from praying. That’s why, by the way, just a few weeks ago, we saw the demon-possessed killer mock the prayers of children, writing, “Where’s your God now?” Sadly, multiple leftist politicians joined the mocking.
But as President Trump said in concluding his remarks, “America has always been a nation that believes in the power of prayer, and we will never apologize for our faith.”
