 John, A few weeks ago, hundreds of Border Patrol agents showed up outside a peaceful gathering of Californians and elected officials announcing our response to Trump’s Texas gerrymandering scheme. This was a massive deployment, and the timing and location are a real cause for concern.
We’re no longer surprised at how low this administration will go. This follows a pattern of Trump’s idea of justice: intimidate your enemies. But we are not going to be intimidated. I led my fellow California colleagues in demanding answers from Kristi Noem, because we must know if federal resources are being used to illegally suppress dissent. I remain determined alongside my colleagues to stand ten toes deep in our fight to actively protect our democracy ahead of this midterm election.
The only reason Donald Trump is taking these unprecedented steps of changing Congressional districts mid-cycle is because they know how unpopular their policies and behavior have become. Trump is deathly afraid that if he doesn’t rig the system now, the Republicans will lose their grip next November. Trump set the rules of engagement - it would be irresponsible for California to refuse to fight back. The Proposition 50 redistricting effort is the best chance we have to balance the scales.
