I’m
absolutely horrified by increased reports of children being harmed by
interactions with AI — including one young Californian who died by suicide
after engaging with a chatbot.
As a parent, this is extremely worrying to me. And as Attorney General, I
am committed to protecting children here in California and across the
country from harm by AI companies.
Alarm bells should be ringing inside every AI company. Protecting kids and
pursuing innovation cannot be at odds — they must go hand in hand.
This week I sent a letter to OpenAI expressing my deep concern over how
their products interact with children. My office is also investigating
OpenAI’s proposed restructuring. As a nonprofit with a stated safety
mission, that commitment must remain front and center.
Here’s the
simple truth: one child harmed is one too many. Companies developing and
deploying AI technologies *must* exercise sound judgement and not harm
children.

kids is a non-negotiable priority when it comes to AI.

Thank you for speaking up with me on this important issue. California is
watching closely — and we will not stand by while companies allow
irreparable harm to our kids.
Sincerely,
Rob
