Dear John, How amazing would it be if we could build more affordable housing and create a healthier, safer, better-connected city that is funded mostly by visitors and people who do not pay City property taxes?! Well I’ve got good news! On November 4th you have an opportunity to vote FOR Knoxville Neighborhoods, by supporting a half cent increase to the local sales tax. Since so many people shop in Knoxville, this half cent increase, which equates to a nickel on every $10, would generate an estimated $47 million per year for local City projects! These funds will be used for affordable housing, more sidewalks (especially near schools), and our greenways and parks. Local dollars, local control, local impact! The first question I am usually asked is how this would impact lower income families who are already struggling to pay their bills. We affirmatively exempted groceries, so the referendum would not affect the cost of groceries. And sales tax is NOT imposed on many other household essentials such as gas, utilities, childcare, health care, or prescriptions. We estimate that for the typical lower income household the effect of the increase would be $5-$7 per month. Our goal is to make Knoxville work for everyone! But we can’t pass this referendum without you! Our biggest need is for volunteers. As you can imagine, getting people to vote for a tax increase requires some explaining. The good news is that once most people learn what it's for, who would pay, and the pocketbook impact, they nod their heads and say, yes this is a good idea. We just need to have more of those conversations. Please join us to knock on doors in your neighborhood and in neighborhoods across the city by signing up to volunteer. If you can’t spare any time, but still want to help the campaign, consider donating. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with questions, and don’t forget to Vote FOR Knoxville on November 4th! Your Neighbor, Indya Kincannon I met JJ today while grocery shopping. He bikes to Kroger from his affordable home at Cagle Terrace. He loves swimming at Augusta Quarry and Knoxville’s welcoming vibes. We need more affordable homes and safe connections for neighbors across Knoxville!
