Donald Trump wants to put a MAGA extremist in charge of the nation’s official economic data.
E.J. Antoni – Trump’s nominee to lead the Bureau of Labor Statistics – ran a secret Twitter account where he posted election conspiracy theories, QAnon content, and Nazi references. He mocked LGBTQ+ people, spread COVID-19 misinformation, and launched vile, misogynistic attacks against Kamala Harris and other public figures.
The account, verified by multiple news outlets, pushed content glorifying violence and attacking democracy. Antoni didn’t just "like" this content – he authored it, hid behind aliases, and built an online persona rooted in hate and far-right propaganda.[1,2]
This role has never been more important. The latest BLS data showed only 22,000 jobs added in August – well below expectations. Unemployment is rising. Trump's second-term policies – like mass deportations and aggressive tariffs – are already hitting key industries and slowing growth.[3]
In moments like this, the country needs someone in this role who will tell the truth, even when it’s uncomfortable. Someone with economic expertise, credibility, and integrity. Not a loyalist who built a following on lies, bigotry, and culture war outrage.
If confirmed, Antoni would have enormous influence over how Americans understand their own economic reality – and how much of that reality gets reported at all.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics exists to inform the public, not to serve a political narrative. When that independence is gone, it’s working people – especially those already struggling – who get hurt the most.
