Friend, Phil Weiser here, and I’m reaching out regarding a case that’s currently in front of the Supreme Court. Take a look at this headline:

One month from now, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments in Chiles v. Salazar, a lawsuit challenging Colorado’s ban on conversion practices for minors.

Here’s the truth: The so-called “gay conversion therapy” is a dangerous and thoroughly discredited practice. When Colorado banned this practice on a bipartisan basis, my daughter could not believe it was not banned earlier, noting that it was cruel and harmful to allow kids to undergo this experience.

My daughter was right. Conversion practices have a proven association with increased depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts and behavior. That’s why the Colorado General Assembly in 2019 enacted the Minor Conversion Therapy Law to ban mental health professionals from providing patients with this cruel, substandard level of care. And as of right now, 25 states have similar laws on the books as well.

In Colorado, we are committed to protecting LGBTQ+ minors from unscientific and harmful so-called gay conversion therapies. Our law is humane, smart, and we’re committed to defending it — because no amount of talk, pressure, or shaming can make a gay person not gay, or change one's gender identity one way or the other.

It’s simple: Licensed therapists shouldn’t be able to abuse their position of trust to push an agenda that causes long-lasting harm and trauma to children, and their families.
