We've got some rare good news in the fight against Trump’s deportation machine: the brutal “Alligator Alcatraz” detention camp in Florida is being dismantled.

A few weeks ago, a federal judge ruled that the camp violated environmental law, and now detainees are being moved out. This is a major setback to Trump and Ron DeSantis’s plan to replicate this model of cruelty across the country.

But Republicans have already got their eyes on a new site for a replacement facility, and Nevada could become home to a detention camp they’re calling “Coyote Compound.”

Like Alligator Alcatraz, this facility is designed to be intentionally inhumane. In Florida, migrants were crammed into cages, fed maggot-infested food, and left in sweltering heat with sewage flooding the floors. The complex had no air conditioning for detainees and lacked adequate emergency planning. Conditions were so bad that one former employee described the place as “an oversized kennel,” and leadership is working hard to suppress rumors of an uprising.

We need to act now to ensure Nevada does not become the next proving ground for Trump's campaign of cruelty.

Governor Joe Lombardo knows that Nevadans largely oppose his decision to involve the state’s National Guard in ICE operations. If we can generate enough public pressure, we can push him to reject Coyote Compound before it’s built.

We refuse to stay silent and allow history to repeat itself. The United States has a long record of targeting cultural groups, from the forced relocation of Native populations to Japanese American internment in the 1940s. We cannot allow this record to be continued by today’s ICE facilities, which are specifically designed to strip people of their dignity and rights.

Alligator Alcatraz is winding down. Let’s make sure Coyote Compound never opens.
