I wanted to
reach out with a personal note, because I know it’s a challenging time for
so many across California and America.
This year we’ve watched a President who has openly admired dictators
repeatedly push the boundaries of his power and brazenly disregard the
rule of law.
We’ve seen relentless attacks on our rights and freedoms. Many people feel
demoralized and frightened, and I understand.
But today I urge you not to feel hopeless, because we’re not helpless:
we’re fighting back.
Just this week, the court delivered a major victory in our fight against
Trump’s lawlessness — affirming that the use of military troops for
civilian law enforcement in California was a violation of the law.
And it’s not just lawsuits. It’s thousands of No Kings protests. It’s
neighbors talking to neighbors about what’s going on in our country. It’s
millions of Americans standing up to speak out against tyranny.
History has shown us that people power is the most potent power there is:
from the civil rights movement to the farm worker movement to the
restoration of democracy in countries around the world.
So long as we keep standing up and speaking out together, people will have
the first and the last word in the story of this state and this country —
period.
What’s more, our Constitution was built for a moment like this. It was
carefully designed to protect America against kings and tyrants — and as
Attorney General, I will do my part and remain resolute in my commitment
to defend the Constitution.
But I do need you by my side, because people power requires ALL of us. So
I’m asking you today to recommit yourself to this fight.
