Hello,

The Lapeer City Commission is having a Housing Workshop meeting this Monday. This meeting is in regards to the development of the E.T. White Property (former school). The City is planning a low-income (affordable housing) development on this property.

When: Monday, September 8th at 5:30 PM

Where: Lapeer City Hall - 576 Liberty Park, Lapeer, MI 48446

I ask that you attend this meeting if you are able and speak during the Public Comment period at the end of the meeting. You do not need to be a Lapeer City resident to attend and speak at public meetings. I live outside the city, however, I frequent the city; making use of the public spaces and patronizing businesses.

This plan for low-income housing is part of a trend taking the city in the wrong direction. The City has allowed the following:
* Allowed MDHHS to rent the old Rite Aid building at the heart of the city. This denies businesses a prime commercial location and will now bring people who use MDHHS services into the city.
* Allowed many marijuana businesses in the city and will not enforce their own odor ordinances.
* Allowed the Adam and Eve store in the city.
* Allowed CMH to operate the Golden Arrow Drop-In Center at the old Perkins property. This center is for people recovering from mental health issues, but I have been told that individuals at this center are able to wander around and near the property with no supervision from the staff.

Please note that the MDHHS building, Golden Arrow Drop-In Center, and the E.T. White Property (location for proposed low-income housing development) are in the same area. Is this area becoming a bright spot in the City? Is this the growth we want for the City of Lapeer?
If this trend continues I fear a future where I will choose to not visit the City. This is why I am fighting this issue now and why I am asking for you to attend this meeting and share your thoughts with the City Commissioners.
