Come to the 9/11 General Meeting - UNITE HERE Speakers and Convention Recap!
|
Houston DSA’s monthly general meetings are where the membership comes together to be in community and discuss the activities going on within our own chapter and the national organization. For September we'll have an extended National Convention recap, as well special guest speakers from UNITE HERE Local 23 hospitality workers union who will be updating us on their strike! General meetings are open to non-members and a great way to learn about the work we are doing! You won't want to miss this months meeting!

To the Picket Line! Picket Support Needed until Sept 10th
|
This past Labor Day, our members participated in several events including a labor day protest hosted by IYT and a Workers Over Billionaires rally and picket with Unite Here Local 23 union! Hilton-Americas hotel workers went on strike Monday, demanding a new contract that guarantees at least $23 an hour, better working conditions, and the dignity and respect they deserve!
But the strike isn't over, and Local 23 still needs our support! Workers will be on strike from Sept 1st -10th from 6am to 8pm. Come join the picket line and support the workers as they fight against the billionaire class who want to deny them a living wage!
When workers win, we all win!
|
Houston DSA members will be mobilizing to the 5pm - 8pm picket shift this Sat, Sept 6th! Come out in your DSA gear or wear red in solidarity!
Can’t join the picket? Donate to the Unite Here Local 23 GoFundME. All donations help support the workers on strike!

Canvass for Immigrant Justice!
|
For the last two months, our Immigrant Justice campaign and the Houston Leads coalition have been pressuring City Council members to pass legislation defending immigrants and ending HPD collaboration with ICE. Our demands have been largely ignored, and we will continue to fight until they're met.
In the meantime, there is always work to be done to fight for immigrant justice and protect our communities. On Sept 13th, the Immigrant Justice Campaign will be canvassing the Fiestas Patrias International Parade! Come out and join us as we talk with fellow Houstonians and gather signatures for our City Council petition.

Stop Fueling Genocide Picket Recap
|
On August 23rd, the Stop Fueling Genocide Working Group picketed two local Houston Chevron station with the aim to educate community members about Chevron’s direct support of the genocide in Gaza and to discourage people from buying Chevron gas. The response was overwhelmingly positive from customers and people driving by, and we successfully discouraged several people from buying Chevron again. One Chevron owner, who has a decade old contract, expressed support for our campaign. We will continue to pressure Chevron station owners to sign our petition, and to let gas purchasers know exactly what they are supporting when they buy Chevron gas.
