The mayor’s strategy of “playing nice” has repeatedly failed since the beginning of Trump’s second term. It hasn’t protected us from the once-unimaginable reality of armed soldiers patrolling our streets, or the House threatening to replace our elected officials. By willingly surrendering our right to an accountable local government, appeasement makes it harder for the District—or any city—to be governed in a way that actually serves its people.
