When politicians start talking about sending the National Guard into American cities, alarm bells go off. That’s exactly what Senate hopeful Mike Rogers just called for in Detroit — and it’s drawing sharp criticism for good reason.

Here’s the reality: Detroit has seen historic drops in crime. Homicides are at their lowest in over 50 years. Nonfatal shootings are down by a quarter. Carjackings? Down 90% since 2013. That’s progress built by community partnerships — not soldiers on street corners.

But instead of acknowledging that progress, Rogers is pushing fear. We’ve seen this playbook before: ignore the facts, stoke division, and call for heavy-handed responses that erode trust instead of building it.

Here in Virginia, we know that real safety comes from investing in our communities, supporting families, and giving people opportunities to thrive. That’s the opposite of turning our streets into a political stage.

Frontline Virginia exists to push back on this kind of fear-driven politics and to fight for the values that keep our communities strong. If you’re with us, now is the time to stand up.

Together, we can keep Virginia — and the country — moving forward.
