On Tuesday, Governor Walz joined students and teachers at Deerwood Elementary School in Eagan to celebrate the first day of school.
"Nothing beats the energy of the first day of school," said Governor Walz. "Thank you to all the teachers, administrators, and school staff in Minnesota who have been preparing for weeks to welcome our kids back to the classroom!"
On Friday, Governor Walz and Lieutenant Governor Flanagan hosted the opening ceremony for the Tribal Flag Plaza where the flags of the 11 sovereign Tribal Nations sharing land with Minnesota were permanently raised on the Capitol Grounds.
"Alongside Tribal partners, we raised the flags of the 11 sovereign Tribal Nations on the Capitol Mall," said Governor Walz. "With these flags raised high, we’re honoring our government-to-government partnership and recognizing that our Indigenous neighbors are not in the past."
"It was a profound honor to see the flags of the 11 sovereign Tribal Nations raised at the Capitol - a space that belongs to all Minnesotans," said Lieutenant Governor Flanagan. "Each of these 11 flags represents a people, a language, a history, and a sovereign Nation that has survived, resisted, and endured."
