We hope everyone had a great summer! Northern Virginia Bird Alliance is back and ready for a busy, bird-filled fall.
We know fall migration has already begun, so we recommend you keep an eye on BirdCast ([link removed]) and turn out lights on peak nights to give our feathered friends the smoothest commute down south we can!
As we head into the weekend, we wanted to share with you some upcoming events we have in September and encourage you to keep an eye on our calendar ([link removed]) as more are added in the next couple of weeks.

September 7 - Birdwalk at Occoquan Bay Wildlife Refuge:
Join birdwalk leader John Colpoys and our Community Engagement Coordinator, McKenzie Ingram for a walk this Sunday at 7:30 AM. No RSVP required, just be in the main parking lot on time to meet up with the group! Additional details can be found here. ([link removed])

September 9 - Virtual Webinar on Fall Butterfly Identification:
Join us at 7PM for a virtual butterfly ID event, where Larry Meade will walk us through the common species and help us differentiate some of the trickier look-a-like species. Those attending the butterfly count later this month are heavily encouraged to register for this webinar event.
September 10 - Evening Bird Walk at Dyke Marsh:
Join birdwalk leader and NVBA Vice President, Andreas Seiter for an evening birdwalk at 5PM! No RSVP required, please meet up with Andreas in the parking lot by the picnic area.
September 10 - Virtual Watercolor Program:
In this class, students will paint beautiful Barred Owl portraits, learn how to mix neutral colors, as well as techniques of layering colors to create various feather patterns. Your instructor, Ronna Fujisawa of Salty Water Art, will be your guide through the step-by-step process of painting. This is an online class open to all levels of watercolor painters but participants must register here to hold their spot. ([link removed])
September 13 - Latino Conservation Week Bird Walk:
Join Northern Virginia Bird Alliance (NVBA) in celebrating this year's Latino Conservation Week alongside our partners at the Prince William Soil and Water Conservation District! NVBA is providing a guided bird walk of Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge where bird guides Jo Doumbia and McKenzie Ingram will provide bird identification and birdwatching tips in both Spanish and English. September 14 - NextGEN Bird Walk at Theodore Roosevelt Island:

September 16 - Virtual Wildlife Corridor Action Plan:
The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) Wildlife Action Plan is a statewide conservation plan for plants and wildlife. Jeff Trollinger’s presentation will introduce you to the Wildlife Action Plan, identify some of Virginia’s species of greatest conservation needs, and discuss some examples of conservation successes. September 21 - Alliance Afternoon - Amazing Insects:
Join us to learn from NVBA Board Member and insect expert, Judy Gallagher, all about these important creatures that form the foundation of food webs that sustain the birds around us! Please register here for additional details ([link removed]) .

September 17 - Invasive Plant Removal:
The Lockwood/Elmwood senior housing complex is a partner in the "Stretch Our Parks" program to restore habitat in and around parks to improve and expand habitat for birds and other pollinators and wildlife. September 21 - DHARA Restoration Effort:
Can’t make it to this month’s Alliance Afternoon? No problem - come help work on this exciting habitat restoration project! ARMN, the Northern Virginia Bird Alliance, and the Tree Stewards of Arlington and Alexandria have been collaborating with Dominion Hills Area Recreation Association (DHARA) via NVBA's Stretch Our Parks initiative to restore the natural habitat on DHARA property. September 24 - Remove Invasive Plants at Powhatan Springs:

Hidden Oaks Nature Center Bird Counts:
Join Hidden Oaks Nature Center for their fall migratory bird counts! ([link removed]) They are looking for volunteers to join their Park Volunteers to help assess birds that are passing through the park. Your help will support Hidden Oaks in making educated management decisions as they work to create their interpretive plan! Minimum age to participate is 14, with children under the age of 16 needing to be accompanied by an adult. Beginner birders are welcome. Bird Counts will take place from 8-9:00 AM at Hidden Oaks Nature Center. We will meet in front of the native garden by the main parking lot.
