** Message from Councilmember McDuffie
Neighbors,

I support the DC AG’s lawsuit. As a lifelong Washingtonian, a former DOJ Civil Rights Attorney, and author of landmark policing reforms in the District of Columbia, I know that lasting public safety depends on accountability, opportunity, and community trust. The sight of armed National Guard troops patrolling our neighborhoods, many with no training in local law enforcement or understanding of our communities, only blurs the lines of police accountability, chills economic activity, and erodes community trust.

In Service,

** The NEXTDC Initiative Launches and a Spotlight on DC’s Economic Future

Members of Team McDuffie attended Destination DC’s 2025 Marketing Outlook Event. The event gave key insights into the future of DC’s economy and showed that DC is ready for the next generation of investment, development, and opportunity.

At the event, Destination DC introduced their NEXTDC (Network, Educate, Experience, Travel) Initiative. This initiative is a rebrand of its 501(c)(3) affiliate foundation and it aims to inspire and prepare the next generation of hospitality and tourism professionals by providing students with access to travel experiences, industry education, and career exposure. Proceeds from the Marketing Outlook Meeting supported NEXTDC programs.

We are thrilled to have been a part of this exciting event and look forward to seeing where this initiative will take the District!

**Reimagining 1990 K Street: From Empty Office to Vibrant Community Hub

Earlier this week, I had the honor of delivering remarks at the groundbreaking ceremony for 1990 K Street, a transformative project that signals the future of downtown D.C. Once an underutilized office space in the wake of the pandemic, this site will soon be home to vibrant retail and additional housing.

Projects like 1990 K Street are essential to building a more inclusive and sustainable D.C. community. I’ve supported this initiative from its earliest stages because it reflects our commitment to smart development, economic opportunity, and livable neighborhoods for all residents.

D.C. is open for business, and this groundbreaking marks another step toward a more resilient and thriving downtown.

**Share Your Feedback: Out-of-School Time Survey

Are DC’s afterschool and summer programs meeting your family’s needs? The Office of Out of School Time, under the Deputy Mayor for Education, is inviting you to share your voice. Your feedback will help shape the future of out-of-school programming by identifying what works, what’s missing, and what barriers may be preventing your child from participating. This is part of a citywide effort to improve access, equity, and quality in programs that support our students beyond the classroom. The survey is anonymous. You can share your feedback here: [link removed].

**Parent Resources

Looking for enriching after-school options for your child? The DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) still has open slots in its After School Access and Enrichment Zones programs. These programs are designed to provide safe, structured, and engaging environments for students after the school day ends. Register here: DPRprograms.com.
