Dear John,

Congress was in recess in August, but I was still busy working for my district and the American people. 

Last month, I celebrated the 90th anniversary of Social Security by hosting a town hall in the district with California seniors. With Social Security being threatened by the Trump Administration, it was important to talk to the recipients of Social Security about their fears and what Democrats are proposing to protect it for generations.

I also demanded answers from the Trump Administration on why they have rolled back language access services across federal agencies, which will mean countless AANHPI and other limited English proficient households lose access to federal services.  

I conducted oversight tours of both the Adelanto detention center and the DTLA detention center—where I saw the inhumane conditions these detainees are living in and spoke with the detainees to hear their experiences.

It is vital that Congressmembers like me have oversight of these detention centers so we can expose the conditions to the American people and stand up for the innocent people being detained. 

I also joined my California colleagues in an oversight letter condemning ICE's intimidation practices against political opponents. Our country is made up of immigrants and our federal agencies should not only reflect that through language access, but also stop using ICE to quash dissent.

Lastly, in Washington, I introduced the CREATE Act, bipartisan legislation that will extend and expand federal tax incentives for film and television produced here in the United States.

In addition to this work, I commemorated the completion of debris removal from the Eaton fire, the opening of outdoor dining facilities for Pasadena restaurants established with $1 million in federal funding I secured, visited the Carpenters Union Local 323 Training Center to hear from union members, and participated in a hearing on climate action at the People's Hearing on Extreme Weather.

It was a busy month in California and now that Congress is back in session, there is so much more to accomplish. The Trump Administration and the GOP might be in control of Congress, but that won’t stop me from fighting for you, your families, and your rights.
