When I joined the Army, I swore an oath to support and defend the
Constitution of the United States.
And the Constitution states that voters should pick their Members of
Congress – not the other way around.
But last week in Texas, Republicans gerrymandered the maps to all but
guarantee they’ll pick up five U.S. House seats in the next election. And
they did it because the President of the United States asked them to do
it.
This undemocratic power grab isn’t any different from when Donald Trump
asked Georgia election officials to “find him more votes” after he lost
the 2020 election. Except now, he’s asking Republican governors across the
country to find him more House seats so he can hold onto power in next
year’s elections.
Trump is putting his finger on the scale to manipulate our fair and free
elections because he knows his policies can’t win at the ballot box. He’s
seen the power this team has to organize around a common purpose – and
he’s afraid of what will happen when we come together to demand justice,
fairness, and opportunity for all.
When it comes to responding to this affront to our democracy,
John xxxxxx, I believe we
must keep all our options on the table. We need to be able to have fair
maps here in Maryland and across the country. Most of all, we must never
turn our backs on the sacred promises guaranteed to every American by our
Constitution.
