General Newsletter From the Office of Senator Andy Kim

Happy Friday, New Jersey!

Congress is back in session this week. Senator Kim was busy attending hearings, fighting for public servants at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), and continuing to keep the needs of New Jerseyans front of mind as we approach another government funding deadline.

WE'D LIKE TO HEAR FROM YOU: 9/11 AND ACTS OF SERVICE

Next week is the 24th anniversary of the horrific terrorist attacks of September 11th which took the lives of 750 New Jerseyans. While it was a tragic moment for our state and country, it was also a call to service for so many, including Senator Kim.

Senator Kim would like to highlight the legacy of service that started from that fateful day.

Working for New Jersey:

TALKING DEMOCRACY AND GOV FUNDING WITH BRIAN LEHRER:

This Tuesday, Senator Kim called in for an appearance on WNYC’s The Brian Lehrer Show.

The Senator spoke about his recent congressional delegation trip to South Korea and Japan, shared thoughts about Immigration, and answered your texts/calls about democracy and government funding.  On immigration, the Senator spoke to concerns about the Delaney Hall Detention Facility, and his intentions to follow up on reports of inhumane treatment of detainees. He also spoke about America’s global positioning. Trump’s ‘America First’ policy, the Senator said, is becoming ‘America alone.’

“Why do we care?” he was asked.

His answer: “It’s about American economic leadership... everybody I've talked to, they want the United States to continue to have the strongest economy in the world. We want to be able to provide for our families. We also want to keep ourselves safe... that all requires work in terms of global leadership.”

THE RESEARCH THAT KEEPS OUR SKIES SAFE:

Last week, The Senator visited the William J Hughes Technical Center in South Jersey. At this facility, the FAA conducts research into mechanical safety, fixing delays, and bettering resources for Air Traffic Controllers.  On his visit, the Senator had the opportunity to review new technology, learn about the fire-resistant materials used in plane construction, and watch controllers engage in a communication simulation.

Working for you at the Capitol:

FIGHTING FOR PUBLIC SERVANTS AT FEMA AND THE CDC:

Last week, FEMA employees raised concerns about the country’s disaster response readiness, signing a letter that criticized Trump. They were suspended. CDC workers walked out to protest the permanent firing of 600 of their fellow employees.

As a previous career federal government employee, the Senator finds “it is absolutely abhorrent to see the retaliation facing public servants trying to keep Americans safe."

WHAT IS A POCKET RESCISSION?

Congress approved $4.9 billion in foreign aid. The Trump White House canceled all of it.

They did so by gaming the calendar -- waiting to send the request until the end of the fiscal year when the congressional timeline would not allow lawmakers to respond. This “pocket rescission” continues the administrations assault on foreign aid, and the Senator is working hard to fight against it.

ENGAGING KOREAN YOUTH IN SEOUL:

While in South Korea, the Senator met with national leaders and heads of state. He also made it a priority to meet with young people who live in the country.

A group of 40 gathered at the American Diplomacy House for a Youth Townhall, to listen to the Senator speak, and to share their own thoughts and experiences when asked. Among them: a young woman who had to studied in America, and had to leave due to US policies on student visas, a student who asked for the Senator’s perspective on rising prejudice, and a Chicago-born South Korean expressing concern about the parallels she saw between the events in the US Capitol on January 6th and in the declaration of martial law in South Korea in December of 2024.

Follow along on the Senator’s social media as content from these conversations is released.
