I’ll be honest, JOhn: I’m livid. And that’s not a statement I make lightly.
The Trump administration is taking its marching orders from a fringe conspiracy theorist who’s associated with white supremacists and 9/11 denialism – and it’s directly undermining our career intelligence professionals.
Weeks ago, I arranged a meeting at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency’s headquarters in Springfield, Virginia. Engagements such as these are a core part of my responsibility to provide oversight and support to our intelligence community. And they have never been questioned or politicized… until now.
Earlier this week, conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer discovered the unpublicized visit and launched a campaign of baseless attacks against me. And then, Trump’s henchmen canceled my visit.
I can’t overstate how unprecedented and dangerous this is. This administration is taking its marching orders from Laura Loomer – a wackjob with a long history of outlandish fringe views, including 9/11 denialism, anti-Muslim harassment campaigns, and associations with white supremacists.
Let me be clear: I will never be deterred from carrying out my constitutional responsibilities. The business of government and the security of our nation will not be dictated by extremist attention-seekers.
But for goodness sake – I can’t be in this fight alone. And right now, the silence from my Republican colleagues is speaking volumes. It doesn’t matter how dangerous, reckless, or irresponsible the Trump administration acts, too many of my Republican colleagues would rather fall in line than stand up for what is right.
I’ve never been more determined to hold this critical seat for Democrats and flip the balance of power in Congress.
