A Message from Gabe:

Greetings Rhode Islanders,

As kids head back to school, President Donald Trump's harmful economic policies are making back-to-school season even more expensive. According to an independent analysis, over the past year:

  • Notebooks have gone from $4.68 to $5.48
  • Folders from $7.88 to $8.88
  • Lunchboxes are up from $13.97 to $15.13
  • Basic headphones from $21.38 to $22.97
  • Flash cards have almost doubled in price from $1.62 to $2.31
  • And binders are up from $12.18 to $13.74 today

When every penny matters, Trump’s reckless tariff policies are raising prices for American families.

Rhode Island students and families deserve better. Since another court found most of the Trump tariffs unconstitutional, I’m cautiously optimistic they may be rolled back, giving Rhode Islanders some much-needed relief.

On top of this, the latest jobs numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show that Trump's economic policies have resulted in net job losses for the first time since 2020. There are now more people searching for jobs than job openings. I’m working with my colleagues in the House to turn around our stagnating economy by fighting Trump's reckless tariff policies, lowering costs for working families, and defending Medicaid, Medicare and the Affordable Care Act.

As kids return to school, I am fighting for working families across Rhode Island to have a fair shot at the American dream. I hope all of our students have a great school year!

Sincerely,

Gabe Amo
Member of Congress

Returning to Washington to Fight for Rhode Islanders

CLICK HERE TO WATCH: Congressman Amo outlines how he is fighting for Rhode Island families in Congress.

Earlier this summer, Speaker Mike Johnson sent Congress home early. We should have voted to release the Epstein files, gotten justice for victims, and lowered prices for Americans. Now, with less than a month to get conservatives to come to the table and avoid a shutdown — a critical time when our leaders should all be negotiating in good faith — the Trump administration is making our National Guard troops pick up trash and renaming the Department of Defense.

And if that wasn’t bad enough, Trump is unconstitutionally using a move called a ‘pocket rescission’ to hold up $4.9 billion in foreign aid Congress approved. These are funds used to prevent wars, famine, and pandemics – most importantly, to keep Americans employed.

I will fight for you and work with any lawmaker who is willing to put the American people first. I am committed to fighting to protect American jobs, health, and safety.

Since he took office in 2023, Speaker Mike Johnson's lack of commonsense gun violence policy has devasted our country and 74,640 Americans have since died from gun violence.

In the wake of the another devastating school shooting in Minnesota, I joined over 120 of my colleagues in demanding Speaker Johnson and Republicans step up to stop the unnecessary gun deaths of children, teens, and law enforcement.

Stopped by the ‘Impossible Dream,’ a fully wheelchair-accessible sailing catamaran that enables Rhode Islanders with disabilities to enjoy a staple of Rhode Island summer.

Always a pleasure to learn from constituents about how Congress can work towards making our country more accessible!

Kicked off the festivities for the annual Rhode Island Chinese Dragon Boat Races and Taiwan Day Festival!

There is no better way to celebrate our vibrant Taiwanese-American community and discuss my work on the House Foreign Affairs Committee than with dragon boats and dumplings in Pawtucket.

Thanks to the Bristol Middle Passage Port Marker Project team, sculptor Spencer Evans, and foundry artist Jeff Buccacio, this new sculpture continues the community work to heal and speak truth to Bristol's role in the transatlantic slave trade.

I spoke with constituents about how Congress cannot and should not erase history, no matter how difficult. We should learn from it to push forward and shape the future that we all deserve.

Thank you to the Rhode Island Labor History Society for another solemn commemoration of the Saylesville Massacre of 1934. I spoke with constituents about how I am continuing to fight for workers and organized labor in Congress.

Congress must remember all those who have sacrificed and continue to ensure that we value workers — on Labor Day, and every day.

The Ocean State is leading the way in maritime and undersea technology.

Visited 401 Tech Bridge's Blue TIDE event in Newport and saw some incredible marine tech demonstrations, cutting-edge University of Rhode Island engineering blue innovation, and even christened the new CET Autonomous Underwater Vehicle.

Central Falls Restaurant Week is here – and it is the perfect time to support local businesses and enjoy international flavors all in one square mile!

Talked with Central Falls Mayor Maria Rivera at a restaurant on Broad Street, where we discussed my work in Congress to support the local culinary scene.

Had a blast at the Hope and Main Appreciation Party – uplifting local food entrepreneurs and celebrating the flavors that fuel our community.

It was a great opportunity to speak with Rhode Islanders about how Congress can support small businesses.

Countering Trump's Policies in the Courts

The Trump administration's policies are being challenged and overturned in court. Americans have filed 383 lawsuits against the Administration, and judges have partially or fully blocked over 126 of Trump's executive actions.

Recent Courtroom Wins:

✅ APPEALS COURT STOPS TRUMP FROM USING ALIEN ENEMIES ACT — A judge blocked the Trump administration from deporting Venezuelans using the Alien Enemies Act.

JUDGE STRIKES DOWN TRUMP TARIFFS — A federal judge issued a ruling saying Trump could not issue unilateral tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. This case could result in a $150 billion refund for American businesses.

TRUMP's ASYLUM BAN BLOCKED — A three-judge panel issued an immediate block of Trump’s asylum ban, directing U.S. border agents to stop deporting migrants who face immediate danger in their home countries.

Remembering Judge Caprio

CLICK HERE TO WATCH: Congressman Amo remembers the late, great Judge Frank Caprio.

Last week, I gathered with thousands of Rhode Islanders to honor the late, great Judge Frank Caprio at his calling hours and funeral. As Rhode Island remembers his impact, I took to the House Floor this week to commemorate his lasting legacy and to urge all to spread kindness in his memory.

In his decades on the bench and his iconic work on “Caught in Providence,” he left a lasting impact. Born in Providence in 1936 to Italian immigrants, Judge Caprio graduated from Central High School, served in the Army National Guard, taught American government at Hope High School, got his law degree, and raised five children with his wife of 60 years, Joyce.

Whether dismissing parking tickets for those in need or teaching children about the courtroom, Judge Caprio proved that justice and kindness can go hand in hand. As he said, “Kindness is the one gift that costs nothing, but means everything. Give it freely, especially when it’s hard.” In his memory, spread a little kindness today.
